The Premier League and the English Football League have agreed to continue the temporary pause procedure during matches to allow Muslim players and officials to break their fast during Ramadan.

According to the BBC, the policy will commence this week upon the start of Ramadan and will last for one month, with club captains, alongside match officials, finding a natural pause during matches to allow the procedure to be observed.

Before the commencement of each game across English football, teams and match officials will discuss whether a pause is necessary, and the approximate timeframe for the stoppage will be agreed upon.

Match officials will not stop the game while play is mid-flow, but at the earliest convenient time during goal kicks, throw-ins, and free kicks. Games starting at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday are the only matches that could see a break in play.

The Ramadan match break policy was introduced in 2021, when Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana and Crystal Palace’s Cheikhou Kouyate observed the fast break during a Premier League game between the two clubs.
