The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) says five industries were sealed off in Adamawa in 2021 for violating environmental safety standards.

NESREA coordinator in Adamawa, Aliyu Hamid, disclosed this in an interview with journalists on Wednesday in Yola.

”In 2021, five facilities including food, beverages, tobacco, domestic and industrial plastic, rubber and foam companies, and rice mills were sealed for non-compliance with the agency’s environmental safety standards,” Mr Hamid said.

He explained that the industries failed to comply with standard rules despite several warnings.

Mr Hamid added that the facilities were unsealed after the firms agreed to implement the agency’s recommendations within an acceptable timeline.

“These facilities now have a better process of carrying out an environmental audit of their facilities and have applied for environmental operating permits,” he said.

He noted that the agency had served some construction firms warning letters for not obtaining the environmental impact assessment certificate duly issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment.
