Court sentences father to 80 cane strokes for denying child’s paternity
A Sharia Court at Magajin Gari in Kaduna State ordered that a trader, Abdulhamid Yakubu of Bakin Dogo, be given 80 strokes of the cane for denying the paternity of his sixth child.
Mr Yakubu had in September, dragged his wife, Maryam Muhammad, to the court, alleging that she was an adulterer and that he was not the father of his pregnant wife.
He was then given an option to swear an oath or provide proof showing that the pregnancy was not his, but he refused.
The couple had been married for 21 years and the defendant, Ms Muhammad, gave birth to the sixth child whose paternity was being questioned.
The judge, Murtala Nasir, on Wednesday affirmed that the child belonged to Mr Yakubu.
He also ordered him to take responsibility and provide for all his children.
