COVID-19 deaths surpass three million globally
Global COVID-19 pandemic deaths surpassed three million on Saturday as countries in the world intensify mass vaccination against the deadly virus.
The pandemic which broke out in December 2019 in China has disrupted social, political and economic lives around the world, infecting over 140 million persons and killing over three million, statistics on Worldometer show.
As of Saturday, 140,558,499 cases of COVID-19, 3,012,991 deaths and 119,388,860 recoveries have been reported across countries in the world, according to Worldometer.
The first wave of coronavirus pandemic compelled a global lockdown that saw countries shutting their land, sea and air borders, causing outright cancellation or postponement of major sports, entertainment and political events around the world in 2020.
The United States of America, India and Brazil have recorded the highest number of COVID-19 cases.
In the United States, over 32.3 million cases, over 578,000 deaths and over 24.8 million recoveries have been recorded due to COVID-19 pandemic.
India come second to the United States with 14.5 million cases of COVID-19, over 175,000 deaths and over 12 million recoveries, while Brazil has recorded 13.8 milliom cases of COVID-19, 369,000 deaths and over 12.2 million recoveries.
Cases of COVID-19 infections and deaths have been low in Africa compared to experiences in Europe, Asia and Americas.
However, over 1.5 million cases of COVID-19, over 53,000 deaths and and over 1.4 recoveries have been recorded in South Africa.
In Morocco, over 500,000 cases of COVID-19, over 8000 deaths and over 490,000 recoveries have been recorded, while in Nigeria over 164,000 cases, 154,000 recoveries and over 2000 deaths have been recorded as a result of COVID-19 pandemic.
Mass inoculation has commenced in many countries around the world. “More than 869 million doses have been administered across 155 countries”, Blomberg reported on Friday.
