The Enugu State government and the federal government have commenced e-Government capacity building for no fewer than 110 Enugu State officials within ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in the state.

The week-long training is being organised by the Enugu State ministry of innovation, science and technology; federal ministry of communication, innovation and digital economy (FMCIDE) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

Electronic government essentially refers to the utilisation of information technology, information and communication technologies, and other web-based telecommunication technologies to improve and/or enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery in the public sector.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Friday, the commissioner for innovation, science and technology, Lawrence Ezeh, said that the capacity building programme was aimed at equipping officials with skills needed for modern and tech-driven governance.

Mr Ezeh described the collaborative initiative as “a transformative step” that aligned with global trends in modern governance, adding that the programme marked a significant milestone in Enugu State’s digital advancement agenda.

Represented by the deputy director, Technology Transfer and Science Promotion (TTSP), Ijeoma Nwobodo, the commissioner said, “We live in a time where technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity in all endeavours.

“Governments around the world are embracing e-governance to enhance service delivery, transparency, and citizen engagement. Enugu is fully aligned with this global vision.”

Mr Ezeh commended the federal ministry of communication, innovation and digital economy and KOICA for their continued partnership and dedication to digital progress in Nigeria.

The commissioner noted that the programme was coming at a critical time as public institutions increasingly rely on digital tools to deliver efficient and transparent services.

He expressed hope that the digital skills the officials acquire would create a positive ripple effect throughout the entire government structure within the state.

“This training will not end here. We expect every participant to become a change agent, promoting digital workflows, reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks, paper usage and enhancing the citizen experience across Enugu State,” he said.

The commissioner also highlighted the state government’s broader vision under Gov. Peter Mbah, which prioritised innovation, digital transformation and workforce development in the public sector.

“This administration understands that the strength of our institutions lies in the capability of our workforce, as investing in people, processes and purpose is the backbone of modern governance,” he said.

Mr Ezeh urged the participants at the training to fully embrace the opportunity, encouraging them to be proactive, inquisitive, and solution-driven throughout the training.

“E-Government is not just about technology. It is about people, about how we serve and how we lead. It is about building trust and accountability through accessible and responsive governance.

“Let this be the beginning of a new chapter. Where our public servants become champions of innovation and where our citizens feel the real impact of a digitally empowered government,” he added.

The training, which is to run for five working days, will cover areas such as digital administration, workflow automation, data management and digital citizen-centric service delivery.
