President Akufo-Addo celebrates siting Africa’s first Twitter office in Ghana
The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, has welcome with great excitement, the siting of Twitter’s first African office in the gold coast country.
Mr Akufo-Addo expressed his pleasure shortly after Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced the development on his Twitter handle on Monday.
The Ghanaian leader who described the new development as excellent news, said the government and Ghanaians welcome the announcement and the confidence reposed in their country.
“As I indicated to @Jack in our virtual meeting of 7th April 2021, this is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana, which is critical for the development of Ghana’s hugely important tech sector,” Mr Akufo-Addo tweeted, “these are exciting times to be in, and to do business in Ghana.”
Mr Dorsey made the announcement in a tweet, attaching a link to a blog post titled Establishing Twitter’s presence in Africa.
The blog post describes Ghana as a “champion for democracy” as Ghana supports free speech and online freedom. It also noted the country’s plans to host the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area which falls in line with Twitter’s goal to be present in West Africa and eventually across the continent.
“Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana. To truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent,” the social media company wrote in its blog.
The post also highlighted the importance of investing in local communities and support from society, noting its partnerships with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Afrochella in Ghana, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) in Nigeria, and The HackLab Foundation in Ghana.
