The government cited the story of a prison inmate who previously had no WAEC certificate but went on to earn a bachelor’s degree, completed a master’s programme, and is now seeking a PhD.
He said the NCoS was committed to ensuring all correctional facilities fulfil its mandate of safe custody, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.
Mr Nwakuche said the development sets the stage for significant strides in the NCoS’s mission to ensure public safety and effective offender management.
The suspension took effect on September 26.
Mr Umar said that the service was in custody of the details of the missing inmates, including their biometrics.
Mr Umar attributed the flooding to the overflow and collapse of the Alau Dam in Konduga LGA.

No fewer than 3,590 inmates across the custodial centres in Nigeria are on death row, the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has revealed.
NCoS has called on the public to cooperate with the service to recapture 31 fleeing inmates.
“The judiciary must be independent and free from any form of political influence.’’
