He said NIHSA plans to conduct a national survey of major rivers and tributaries to address these challenges beginning next year.
He emphasised the need for collective efforts to build resilience against flooding, which had become an annual challenge for many communities in Nigeria.
Mr Umar stated, “The rainfall and flood advisories contained in the season climate prediction and annual flood outlooks of Nigeria.’’
He stated, “Following an official communication from the dam’s management, the water release will gradually increase over the next seven days.”
“This is to foster partnership, collaboration and cooperation among relevant stakeholders in emergency management in the country,” he said.
He cautioned people on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways, constructions in flood-prone areas and other human factors.
The NEMA official added that prevention is, however, the best form of remedy for disasters worldwide.
The minister gave the early warning, following earlier predictions by the NIgeria Hydrological Services Agency.
