Mr Trump hoped China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK would send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open for global oil and gas transportation.
France has thrown its weight behind countries along the Persian Gulf and in Jordan in the Middle East against Iran’s provocations.
The deployment reflects growing concerns in Washington that Iran might retaliate against the United States.
