Court sentences minors to juvenile corrective home for stabbing boy

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced two teenagers to 24 months in a juvenile corrective home for stabbing a boy.
The minors pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of assault and causing breach of peace.
However, delivering judgement, Magistrate Olajumoke Somefun, held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that they were guilty as charged.
Ms Somefun ordered that they should be kept for 24 months in Borstal home correctional centre without an option of fine.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Olakunle Shonibare, told the court that the boys committed the offence on April 19, at about 10:00 a.m. at Railway, Lafenwa area in Abeokuta.
Mr Shonibare stated that they tried to extort money and stabbed him with a broken bottle on his head which caused him bodily injury.
He added that the two convicts also conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by breaking bottles in the community.
The prosecutor noted that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 249 and 355 of the criminal code, laws of Ogun, 2006.
