The attack on the police office comes barely a week after police headquarters and a correctional facility were attacked in neighbouring Imo State with over 1,000 inmates released.
Mr Ikpeazu however said he does not agree with the strategy of the group.
“We are yet to get any report from there and I have not been around. I am waiting for the report,” the police commissioner said.
The new unit will coordinate prompt response to violent crimes across the region from its headquarters in Enugu.
The acting police chief held a strategic meeting with police commanders in the zones.
The Nigerian leader also called on security forces to apprehend fleeing prison inmates and police suspects.
Police and correctional facilities were attacked around the state capital on Monday.
The attack came as confrontation intensified between Nigerian security forces and adherents of the separatist IPOB movement across the South-East.
The criminal suspects engaged the police in a gun duel, which resulted in one of the suspects sustaining gunshot injuries.
The hapless state governor urged security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
