Israel’s parliament dissolved, collapsing government; election holds November
Israel’s parliament has voted to dissolve itself, setting the country up for elections for the fifth time in less than four years.
Yair Lapid, Israel’s foreign minister and architect of the outgoing coalition government, was nominated to become the country’s caretaker prime minister on Friday.
Mr Lapid will be the 14th person to hold that office, taking over from Naftali Bennett, Israel’s shortest serving prime minister. The new elections will be held on November 1.
On Wednesday, outgoing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had announced to lawmakers from his political party that he will not stand in the upcoming general elections.
However, he will continue to serve as alternate prime minister in the caretaker government led by Mr Lapid.
Isreal’s coalition government stood at ends on major policy issues like Palestinian statehood, and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. The government’s decline began when members abandoned the coalition.
The dissolution and upcoming elections may see former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu try to regain power.
“My friends and I will form a national government,” Mr Netanyahu said in a video posted on Monday. “A government that will take care of you, all of the citizens of Israel, with no exceptions.”
Mr Netanyahu, now the opposition leader, is currently on trial for corruption. In February, he pleaded not guilty to charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.
