The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted cloudiness and thunderstorms from Friday to Sunday across the country. It warned of the “prospects of continuous rains” and “flash floods.”

NiMet’s weather forecast released on Thursday predicted cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine in the North with chances of thunderstorms in Taraba, Adamawa, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto in the morning.

According to the forecast, thunderstorms are expected in Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Kano and Kaduna later in the day.

“The North-Central region is expected to be cloudy with chances of thunderstorms over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger and Kwara states during the morning hours. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Plateau, Benue, Niger, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory,” stated the report.

It added that there would be “intermittent rains” in Oyo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Bayelsa in the morning and later in the day, thunderstorms would likely be experienced in the inland and coastal cities.

NiMet predicted cloudy skies on Saturday with intervals of sunshine in the North and chances of thunderstorms in Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara in the morning. It also forecast thunderstorms in Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Kano, Yobe and Borno later in the day.

The agency further disclosed that the North-Central would likely face cloudiness with chances of thunderstorms in Niger and Kwara in the morning. Later in the day, it said, thunderstorms could be experienced in the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau and Kogi and cloudy atmosphere in the inland cities and the coastal region of the country in the morning.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected over most places in the region,” added NiMet.

According to NiMet, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are anticipated in the North in the morning on Sunday, with anticipated thunderstorms in Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa and Borno later in the day.

NiMet envisaged a cloudy atmosphere in the North-Central in the morning. The agency predicted inland cities of the South and coastal cities of the South to be cloudy. According to it, rains are expected in most places in the region later in the day.

“To reduce incidents of erosion and overflow of water beyond its normal limit, gutters and water ways should be cleared of debris and obstacles to ensure free flow of water. There are good prospects of continuous rains over the coastal cities of the South within the period of validity of the forecast and as such flash floods are likely to affect some parts of the region,” NiMet advised. “The public is advised to take adequate precautions. Airline operators are advised to get updated weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.”
