F1: Max Verstappen charges to victory in Belgium Grand Prix
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen charged to a fantastic victory at the 2022 Belgian Grand Prix, having started the race in 14th due to FIA penalties.
Sergio Perez in the other Red Bull finished behind his teammate to seal a one-two while Carlos Sainz completed the podium places, holding off Mercedes’ George Russell at the end.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc started behind Verstappen, receiving a grid penalty ahead of the race. He finished behind Russell but was docked five seconds for incurring a pit lane speeding penalty which meant he officially finished in sixth, below Fernando Alonso.
Alonso had been involved in some drama at the beginning, which cost Lewis Hamilton as they collided on the first lap, leaving the British driver to retire from a race for the first time this season.
Verstappen’s victory, plus the extra point for running the fastest lap, means he now leads the driver’s championship by 93 points, while Perez finishing second helped him leapfrog Leclerc on the championship table with eight races to go.
