A Nigerian Army lieutenant-colonel has been killed in an ambush by bandits, military sources told Peoples Gazette.

MZ Manu was fatally wounded in action after a successful clearance patrol in ‘Operation Sahel Sanity’ in Katsina, military sources said. Conflicting reports said Boko Haram elements were amongst those who carried out the attack.

“His death is not only a loss to the 49RC but to the NA and the entire country,” the official said under anonymity to the Gazette Friday afternoon.

A captain and several other soldiers were also killed during the attack, our sources said.

The development came barely days after a colonel was killed also by Boko Haram militants in Damboa, Borno State.

Dahiru Bako was travelling with his troops when he was attacked by militants Sunday morning. The Nigerian Army mourned his death as a big loss and vowed to end the decade-long insurgency.

A spokesperson for the Nigerian military did not return to requests for comments about today’s attack Friday evening.
