Police arrest, arraign gunrunner after intercepting phone call in Benue

The police in Benue have arrested Inalegwu Omafu for alleged criminal conspiracy and act of terrorism. Mr Omafu was consequently arraigned at a Makurdi Upper Area Court on Thursday.
Prosecutor Veronica Shaagee told the court that on August 9, a team of Operation Zenda JTF intercepted a phone conversation between Mr Omafu and another man identified Aka Aboy who is now at large.
She said the accused was heard discussing the procurement and supply of prohibited firearms within Makurdi and environs to facilitate their nefarious activities.
She further said that the accused was tracked and arrested.
The prosecutor said the suspect confessed being into gun running business while the kingpin Aboy and other members of the syndicate were still at large.
She said the accused contravened Section 6(b) of Firearms Special Provisions Act 2004 and Section 4(2) of the Abduction, Hostage Taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Laws of Benue State.
She said investigation into the case was still ongoing and requested additional time to complete.
However, when the case came up for mention, no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction.
The Magistrate, Rosemary Iyorshe, remanded the accused at the Federal Maximum Correctional Centre Makurdi and adjourned the case until November 21 for further mention.
