Makinde vs ALGON: Supreme Court reserves judgment until May 7
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (Oyo chapter) has expressed optimism that history will vindicate its members in their legal tussle with the state government.
ALGON said this in a statement by its Chairman, Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye on Wednesday.
The ALGON in the state comprises the democratically-elected local government executives dissolved by Gov. Seyi Makinde one year into their three-year term.
The association’s optimism was expressed following the pronouncement of a Supreme Court sitting in Abuja which reserved its judgment in the suit until May 7.
“As a body that believes in the rule of law, we have painstakingly followed this line of honour to date, and in due course, history will vindicate us,” it said.
The association urged its members, party faithful, and society to be patient and wait for the court’s final pronouncements.
It said the apex court on similar cases, held that no governor of a state could remove democratically-elected council chairpersons and councillors.
“We believe that our case will not be an exception. The rule of law shall prevail, and we shall triumph at the end of the day. It is not how soon or how long but how fair or good. We stand on the side of posterity,” it said.
