Last night, AFP reported that Governor Babagana Zulum’s convoy was attacked in Baga while on an inspection tour in the area.
About 15 security men, including soldiers and police were said to have been killed in the gun exchange with the terrorists who deployed fatal RPGs and machine guns.
Mr. Zulum has been pushing for the return of internally displaced persons to their homestead as his government ramps up reconstruction of infrastructure devastated by insurgents.
Mr. Zulum insists that keeping IDPs in the state capital was unsustainable, though the military has always advocated caution.
In July, the governor was attacked while on a similar tour to northern Borno, which he linked to sabotage. The military push back on the governor’s conclusion at the time.
The latest attack is seen as a push back on Mr. Zulum’s efforts to see that the people return to their “dignified life.”
