Lawmakers urge Niger govt to renovate dilapidated technical schools

The Niger House of Assembly on Wednesday called on the executive arm of government to renovate dilapidated structures in technical schools and equip technicians with modern equipment across the state.
This was the resolution of the house after a motion brought before the house under matters of urgent public importance calling on the executive arms of government to renovate dilapidated structures and equip and revive technical schools across the state.
The motion was presented by Jibrin Baba, an APC member representing Lavun Constituency at the plenary.
Speaker of the house, Abdullahi Bawa, while reading the resolutions of the house, directed the Commissioner for Education, Hannatu Jibrin, to appear before the house to explain why technical schools had been abandoned and not included among schools renovated despite being dilapidated.
He called on the government to renovate dilapidated structures in technical schools across the state and equip them with equipment and instruments.
Earlier, Mr Baba explained that “technical education equips students with skills and training that involves the use of theoretical and practical approach and other physical instruments in executing projects”.
He said proper technical education requires specialised tools and equipment with expertise and training in scientific skills and knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The lawmaker noted that most structures in technical schools had collapsed, with equipment becoming obsolete and grounded, leaving the students with imagination on how to handle such equipment and instruments.
He expressed worry that students in these technical schools could not meet up with the technologically advanced world and could not cope with modern-day challenges.
