The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday donated 372.5 metric tonnes of grains to the Kaduna State Government for onward distribution to its vulnerable persons.

Mustapha Ahmed, the director-general of the agency,  handed over the relief items to the Kaduna State Government in Kaduna.

He said that  the grains were part of the 12,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains from the National Strategic Reserve Stock approved by President Muhammadu Buhari to aid the vulnerable persons in the state.

Mr Ahmed, represented by Alhassan Nuhu, Director, Relief and Rehabilitation  unit of the agency, explained that the grains were to be distributed to all states of the federation to give succour to the most vulnerable groups of persons.

“Globally, the world is faced by an economic meltdown while disasters are also  impacting people, thus making vulnerability compounding on people.’’

He said that the grains allocated to  Kaduna State are; 210 metric tonnes of maize or seven trucks of 50kg, 100 metric tonnes of sorghum or 3.3 trucks of 50kg and 62.5 metric tonnes of millet or 2 trucks of 50kg.

Mr Ahmed said that the grains would be distributed to the beneficiaries through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

He said that the grains were to cushion the effects of banditry, economic downturn and pre-harvest food shortage that had increased the vulnerability of a segment of the populace in the recent past.

In his response, Muhammad Mukaddas,  the Executive Secretary, Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), commended the Federal Government for its sustained responses to the plights of the people of the state.

He assured  the federal government that the agency would collaborate with its relevant stakeholders to ensure that the items reach the intended beneficiaries across the state.
