A poor housing system and overcrowding have been identified as factors that fuel the spread of tuberculosis.

Kema Onu, FCT Coordinator, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday.

According to Mr. Onu, a poor housing system that allows overcrowding of human beings, sharing congested spaces like houses, has remained one of the greatest causes of the spread of tuberculosis.

“Stopping tuberculosis goes beyond the ordinary Healthcare system alone, but could also be arrested from the public housing system.

“People should live spaciously in well-planned houses, instead of shanties or squalors which increase the risk of Tuberculosis,’’ he said.

The medical practitioner, who described tuberculosis as a twin to HIV/AIDS, called for collaborative healthcare efforts at tackling the menace.

Tuberculosis is a potentially fatal infectious bacterial disease that mainly affects the lungs.

The bacteria that causes tuberculosis is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
