Lionel Messi on Tuesday night became Argentina’s highest World Cup goalscorer, breaking Gabriel Batistuta’s record.

Messi, 35, had earlier equalled and broken Diego Maradona’s eight World Cup goal record.

In Argentina’s quarterfinal game against Netherlands last week, Messi equalled Batistuta’s record of 10 goals.

At the Lusail Stadium, the Argentine talisman netted from the spot to give Argentina the lead in their semifinals game against Croatia.

This Tuesday’s feat brings his World Cup goals to 11, one ahead of Batistuta.

The five-time ballon d’or winner has set a new record, displacing Batistuta to second highest World Cup goal scorer for Argentina.

Messi had said this may be his last World Cup appearance.

A victory for Argentina against Croatia will give Messi an opportunity to fight for the World Cup trophy, the only one he’s yet to win since he started his career.
