The Parliament of South Africa has voted against a motion to commence impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over a report that he was holding undisclosed funds in foreign currency on his farm in 2020. 

Mr Ramaphosa was incriminated by a parliamentary report which accused him of withholding information in the investigation of a robbery at his private farm, as well as holding undisclosed funds of up to $4 million in contravention of the country’s anti-corruption laws and outright violation of the constitution and his oath of office. 

Mr Ramaphosa was found guilty by an independent panel led by the country’s former chief justice, Sandile Ngcobo, after a former intelligence operative, Arthur Fraser, filed a criminal complaint against him. 

The vote, postponed by a week for undisclosed reasons, was an easy win for Mr Ramaphosa as the parliament voted 214 to 148 on Tuesday against the motion to impeach. 

Members of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) voted decisively in favour of the president, claiming that the panel report lacked sufficient evidence to warrant his impeachment.
