Several arrests have been made in the West Africa country of Cameroon following the kidnapping, torturing and killing of Martinez Zogo, a popular radio journalist.

The president’s office in the country announced that an unspecified number of people, who are “strongly suspected” in the murder of Mr Zogo, who was abducted in front a police station in Yaounde on January 17, are now in custody.

Five days laters, the corpse of Mr Dogo, who was a popular voice in Cameroon, anc regularly spoke against cronyism was found heavily mutilated. He was 50-year-old.

According to VOA, President Paul Biya, who has turned himself into a dictator after ruling Cameroon for more than four decades thus far, ordered a ‘combined police and gendarme probe into the murder’.

On Thursday, the minister of state and presidency general secretary Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh said: “”The investigations… have enabled the arrest of several people whose involvement in this odious crime is strongly suspected.”

The authorities also said the search for other suspects in the murder case is still ongoing

Other prominent individuals including writer Calixthe Beyala and intellectual Achille Mbembe have written to condemn the act, noteing a “long tradition of trivializing impunity and accepting atrocities.”

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) also described the killing as “a serious blow for democracy and freedom of the press.”
