Ex-Real Madrid, Arsenal star Mesut Özil retires from football

Former Real Madrid and Arsenal talisman Mesut Özil has announced his retirement from professional football at 34 after suffering through a series of career-limiting injuries, Peoples Gazette can report.
Özil announced via statements across his social media pages on Wednesday afternoon that it is time to put an end to his 17-year trophy laden career that span across several clubs in Europe.
“Hello everyone, after thoughtful consideration, I’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football,” the statement read. “I’ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity.”
“But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it’s become more and more clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football. It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions,” another part of the statement said.
The Germany international began his career with Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 and went on to play for Werner Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Fenerbahçe and recently İstanbul Başakşehir.
During his playing career, Özil won La Liga, Copa del Rey and multiple Emirates FA Cup titles with Arsenal and the 2014 FIFA World Cup with the Germany national team.
He proceeded to thank the fans, family members and everyone who were part of his football journey.
“Special thanks must go to my family members and my closest friends. They have been a part of my journey from day one and have given me so much love and support, through the good times and the bad.
“Thank you to all my fans who have shown me so much love no matter the circumstances and no matter which club I was representing.”
