The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yabagi Sani, has asked the operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) to go after those plotting an interim government in the country.

“If they (SSS) know that the person is doing something untoward to the democracy to scuttle the process, I think the sensible or lawful thing to do is to take the person into custody and ask him questions,” Mr Sani, was quoted by Daily Trust in an interview on Thursday.

His comment came barely 24 hours that the secret police raised the alarm that “some key political players” were allegedly planning to foist an interim government in a bid to plunge the country into crisis.

The SSS, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, on Wednesday, said it considered the plot as not only an aberration but a mischievous way to set aside the constitution and undermine civil rule.

“The Service considers the plot, being pursued by these entrenched interests, as not only an aberration but a mischievous way to set aside the constitution and undermine civil rule as well as plunge the country into an avoidable crisis. The illegality is totally unacceptable in a democracy and to peace-loving Nigerians.

“This is even more so that the machination is taking place after the peaceful conduct of the elections in most parts of the country. The planners, in their many meetings, have weighed various options, which include, among others, to sponsor endless violent mass protests in major cities to warrant a declaration of State of Emergency,” an excerpt from the statement read.

The SSS further added that some politicians had obtained frivolous court injections to forestall the inauguration of new executive administrations and legislative houses at both the federal and state levels.

Since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, there had been various oppositions to his declaration as the winner of the February 25 presidential poll.

The outcome of the presidential poll has left many Nigerians, especially the critics of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr Tinubu, uneasy amid concerns that the results from several states were manipulated.

Positing further, Mr Sani said it would be better for the operatives of the secret police to go directly after those fanning the embers of war and violence in the country.

He added the announcement by the SSS might further create tension in the country, stressing it would be better for those already identified to be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.

“Then they can come out to say so so person has been found guilty. But to make this pronouncement will further create a kind of tension or crisis as if we are not in control,” the IPAC chair noted.
