The alleged killing of an unidentified man by a police officer in Jos has sparked tension in the Plateau state capital.

According to witnesses familiar with the incident, police officers were on a raid to arrest some okada riders around the Terminus axis in Jos North.

In the process of the raid, one of the officers, in an attempt to disperse the irate crowd, fired a shot and a stray bullet hit the man in his shop, ripping out one of his eyes.

The crowd immediately rushed the lifeless body of the man to the Central Mosque in Jos north. The man could be seen in a video making rounds on social media lying down with sympathisers and observers around him.

In the video, a man could also be heard speaking Hausa, confirming that the deceased was in his shop before he was hit by the stray bullet.

The recent development has created an atmosphere of tension as shop owners have been forced to close their shops in fear of a breakdown of law and order.

The Public Relations Officer (PPRO), of the Plateau State Command, Alabo Alfred, confirmed the incident to Peoples Gazette.

“We are still working on it. Don’t worry, you will get my press release on that issue. I am on the road now, I can’t talk,” he said hurriedly.

“It is confirmed that something like that happened, so we are on the investigation. So that you will not say you called PPRO he refused to talk to you,” he added.
