Lagos driver docked for reckless driving, causing death

The police charged Mr Idris, 30, with two counts of reckless driving and causing death to which he pleaded not guilty.

A commercial driver, Hashimu Idris, was on Wednesday docked in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly causing the death of a 30-year-old man.

The police charged Mr Idris, 30, with two counts of reckless driving and causing death to which he pleaded not guilty.

Prosecution counsel Adegeshin Famuyiwa told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 27 at about 3:35 p.m.

Mr Famuyiwa added that the accident happened along Powerline Road, back of Aruna bus stop in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Mr Famuyiwa said the defendant, a driver with a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number AKD 30 XH  “drove recklessly and dangerously with no regard to other road users on the public highway and caused the death of Uzordinma Jonathan, 30.”

The prosecutor said the offences contravened the provisions of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2018.

Magistrate A. O. Ogbe admitted the defendant to a bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mr Ogbe ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation and must have business within Lagos and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case until April 13 for mention.
