Sudan has appealed to the international community to condemn the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) insurgency against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

This is contained in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja by Mohamed Abdelmannan, the Sudanese ambassador to Nigeria, over the issue of rebellion by the RSF against the SAF on April 15.

Mr Abdelmannan appealed to the international community, represented by the United Nations, the African Union and all other international and regional organisations, to condemn the insurgency.

“As the latter are the official and legitimate institutions responsible for the stability and maintenance of peace and security in Sudan, this is inextricably linked to the security and stability of the region,” said the Sudanese ambassador. “The ministry also calls on the UN and its member states to strongly condemn the use of rebels and continuation of fighting in cities and residential areas, including diplomatic missions, as they pose a danger to civilians and also affect women and children, resulting in a flagrant breach and violation of international norms.”

He said the intervention would help deepen cooperation with all diplomatic and consular missions, the UN, specialised agencies, and regional and international organisations accredited to Nigeria.

Mr Abdelmannan, however, gave assurance of the country’s highest consideration to the accredited missions.

On April 15, violent clashes broke out across Sudan, mainly in the capital city of Khartoum and the Darfur region, between rival factions of the country’s military government.

As of Wednesday, no fewer than 296 people have been killed, and more than 3,000 have been injured.

Fighting began with attacks by the RSF on key government sites.

Airstrikes, artillery and heavy gunfire were reported across Sudan, including in the capital Khartoum.

As of April 15, RSF leader Mohamed Dagalo and Sudan de facto leader Abdel Al- Burhan claimed to control key government sites, including the general military headquarters, the presidential palace, Khartoum International Airport, the army chief’s official residence and the Sudan TV headquarters.
