Sunday Ajimoko, chairman of Oye Local Government Area in Ekiti, has warned residents to desist from dumping waste in drains and roadside.

Mr Ajimoko gave the warning while he was moving around the community to monitor the level of compliance by residents to the monthly sanitation in Oye-Ekiti on Saturday.

He said some residents had cultivated the habit of dumping refuse by the roadside and drains, especially during the rainy period, which could cause flooding.

The chairman frowned at landlords and tenants fond of burning refuse in drains and warned them to stop immediately or face severe sanctions from him.

” In spite of regular sensitisation on radio and television against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, some of our people did not comply.

” I want to warn that anybody caught dumping refuse in or burning it inside the drains will be sanctioned.

” We don’t want to encounter flooding in our community, therefore, we will take proactive measures to curb it by all means,” he said.

The chairman advised residents to register with the waste management officials to assist them in disposing of their refuse with reasonable fees.
