The Amotekun Corps in Ondo State has arrested Akinmola Oyekanmi, a member of a notorious kidnap gang.

Mr Oyekanmi, 30, was apprehended by the operatives of the Amotekun Corps in the Okitipupa Area of Ondo after his gang allegedly abducted a middle aged man.

The suspect and his gang of four were said to have been on the “wanted list” of the Ogun State Police Command following reports of kidnapping cases linked to them.

Parading Mr Oyekanmi alongside 25 other criminal suspects in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday, the Commander of Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, said the suspect had successfully carried out two kidnappings in Ogun state.

Mr Adeleye noted that Mr Oyekanmi, who was into farming before joining the gang, was arrested after one of their kidnap victims (name withheld) died in the den of the abductors.

“We arrested the suspect (Oyekanmi) who happened to be a member of a four men kidnap-gang operating in Ogun and kidnapping innocent people for ransom.

“Sadly, one of their victims was killed by the cock of a gun where he was being kept in their den when they were negotiating for ransom from his family members.

“He has been able to confess to the crime during interrogation and we shall hand him over to the Ogun State Police Command because he and his members who are currently at large had been on the wanted lists,” the Amotekun boss added.

In a related development, operatives of the local security outfit also arrested two men faking as mentally derailed persons to perpetrate crime and evil in the state.

The two “mad men” were accused of wandering the streets and allegedly working for suspected kidnappers and ritualists in Ondo’s capital, Akure.

One of them, identified as Akintunde, was alleged to have stormed the room of his landlord and butchered the 84-year-old man to death.

However, Mr Adeleye who paraded the suspects said they had been constituting a security risk and nuisance within the state in the last week.

He explained that the other suspect was nabbed with an android mobile phone allegedly used for his escapades.

He, however, advised the public to be wary of those that pretend to be mad people.

“We have two cases and it is becoming rampant, almost every week, where on searching these mad people, we found expensive phones.

“We found out that the majority of them only pretend to be mad to gather information in the particular area where they intend to operate. One from Idanre and one from Igbara Oke,” he added.

Peoples Gazette reports that among suspects paraded by the Amotekun Corps included armed robbers, rapists, kidnappers, and burglars.
