FIFA punishes England’s James with two-game ban for stamping on Nigeria’s Alozie
FIFA disciplinary committee have extended the ban of England’s Lauren James to two matches following her red card against Nigeria after stamping on Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie.
James was sent off in the 85th minute of the England win over Nigeria in the round of 16 tie at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and such carries an automatic one-game ban but can be extended upon review by FIFA.
However, FIFA has decided to extend the red card two-game ban after the disciplinary committee considered the gravity of the 21-year-old decision to stamp on Alozie during the match.
The Chelsea forward, who is the top scorer in the tournament so far with three goals, will miss England’s quarter-final game against Colombia and the semi-final if the Three Lionesses get there.
“All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened,” the player said on social media in her apology to Alozie.
