Man charged to court for impersonating naval officer

A 29-year-old, Sunday Johnson, was on Friday, docked at a Badagry Magistrate’s Court for impersonating a naval officer.

Mr Johnson, whose address is unknown, was charged on one-count of impersonation, but pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Inspector Ayodele Adeosun, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 16, at about 8:20 p.m. along Owode-Apa, Badagry, Lagos.

The prosecutor alleged that the accused, being a civilian impersonated a naval officer by putting on a complete navy uniform with the intent to be taken to be as a member of the armed forces of Nigeria.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 77 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Lazarus Hotepo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos government.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case until April 27 for further hearing.
