Special marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have been urged to deepen the ideals of volunteerism to achieve the corps mandate of ensuring safer roads.

The national coordinator of the special marshals, John Ugbebor, made the call on Saturday in Abakaliki during a sectoral workshop for special marshals in Ebonyi.

Mr Ugbebor said special marshals should desire to serve society voluntarily without expecting something in return.

“We should always be ready to offer our treasures, talents, and time to support the FRSC being part of its image-making.

“This is why we have individuals who have retired from their various services but are not tired to serve humanity,” he said.

The national coordinator urged them to pay increased attention to their operational guidelines to enhance the volunteerism ideals.

He noted that there are about 15,000 special marshals in the country, with recruits bolstering its number. 

The corps marshal of the FRSC, Dauda Biu, commended the ‘vital’ role they play in realising the corps’ mandate of ensuring safer roads in Nigeria.

Mr Biu, represented by the Enugu zonal commanding officer of the corps, Ocheja Ameh, said the corps is currently seen as a beacon in road safety administration in West Africa.

“The corps administration strives hard to save the lives of citizens, especially the productive workforce mostly affected by road crashes,” he said.

The sector commander of the FRSC in Ebonyi, Henry Igwe, said the workshop was pursuant to provisions of section 27 of the Special Marshals Guidelines 2021.
