The Senate says it will closely work with the executive to ensure the provision of potable water for Nigerians.

The chairman of the Senate Committee on Water Resources, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, said this at the committee’s inaugural meeting.

Mr Yari said water was equated with life, adding that it was the government’s responsibility to provide clean water to its citizens.

He said there was a need to provide water for energy, agriculture and other purposes.

Mr Yari said the committee would work with the executive, government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) under the committee to advance the water resources sector.

He said the committee would look at the 16 agencies and evolve measures to improve their performance on water supply.

The lawmaker said the agencies were created to ensure the water supply for developing sectors like electricity, agriculture and, ultimately, rural development.

Mr Yari said any bill against the people’s interest would not receive the support of the Senate, saying the National Assembly would only legislate and support bills of interest and good of Nigerians.
