NSCDC sets up committee to revamp operations of private security guards

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has inaugurated a 10-member committee to standardise the operations of private guard companies (PGCs) in Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement issued by the corps spokesperson, CSC Babawale Afolabi, on Tuesday in Abuja.
The NSCDC commandant general, Ahmed Audi, said that the committee’s reformation strategy will ensure the implementation of trainings in the PGC sector to meet with best global practices.
He said that the committee was also saddled with the responsibility to suggest ways and forms of training that would professionalise every aspect of the private security industry in the country.
He reiterated that it was the sole mandate of the Corps to train guards and directors of PGC as enshrined in the NSCDC Amendment Act, 2007.
Mr Audi charged members of the committee to demonstrate commitment, transparency and fairness in handling their assignment as opposed to complaints, condemnation and sabotage.
“The success of this assignment and the fate of many companies that will key into it, depends on your commitment and transparency.
“All applications must be treated promptly, fairly and uniformly as the Federal government, through the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo is highly interested in the assignment, warning that no act of levity will be condoned,” he said.
He further said that all existing guards in the industry must be trained and certified as a priority with strict compliance with the outlined criteria.
Chris Adigwu, president, Association of Licensed Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria (ALPSPN), described the inauguration as a great beginning for the Private Guard industry in Nigeria.
According to him, no industry makes progress without standardisation, emphasising that the non-training of guards will affect the operators and practitioners in the industry.
“I pledge on behalf of my colleagues to be fair as we won’t compromise as directed by the government, and our standard will be much improved upon,” he said.
He commended the CG for being passionate about the growth of the private security industry in Nigeria.
