Polling stations open in Netherlands for rep’s election
Parliamentary elections have begun in The Netherlands with all polling stations in the country open.
Around 13.3 million Dutch people are eligible to elect the 150 members of the lower house, the House of Representatives.
The polling stations will be closing at 9:00 p.m., and first predictions are expected after that. Observers expected a neck-and-neck race.
According to the polls, right-wing populist Geert Wilders and his Party for Freedom, are one of the favourites to win the election for the first time.
However, the right-wing liberal People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy and the red-green electoral alliance of Social Democrats and Greens could also become the strongest forces.
The election will set the course for a new political era after around 13 years under the leadership of right-wing liberal Prime Minister Mark Rutte. He announced his departure from national politics in the summer. His centre-right coalition collapsed after just 18 months.
