InterUniRapBattle: Nigerian university students take on each other in rap battle

Inter-university battles are not uncommon in the Nigerian social media space. But university students have taken it to a new level recently, with rappers from rival schools taking each other on in a rap battle for supremacy.
Ordinary, online battles among university students involved throwing jabs at one another with unflattering words, pictures and videos of the schools involved. However, rappers are now jumping on beats to defend their schools in the ongoing battle.
The latest series was instigated by rapper Ambode from the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) on the beat to diss rappers from other institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Lagos State University (LASU), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Kwara State University (KWASU).
Rappers from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Babcock University, Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Covenant University are not left out.
In his lyrics, Ambode described rappers from the other universities as “morons” and “too slow,” boasting they are unfit to withstand him in a face-to-face inter-university rap contest.
As expected, Ambode’s challenge has drawn a series of responses from rappers from the ridiculed universities, and one such response was from Dreww_man, a rapper from OOU.
In his rap response, Dreww_man vowed to teach Ambode a lesson, dismissing him as an upcoming rapper who would never stand, warning that by the time he is done with him, Ambode will not dare others again.
Another person who responded to Ambode was Hardams, a rapper from KWASU. He said Ambode’s diss track is one of the reasons why people believe hip hop is dead, a statement suggesting that Ambode’s “bars” were weak.
Hayzee, a rapper representing LASU, said he was disappointed in Ambode’s “wack flow,” claiming UNILORIN is too inferior to engage LASU in a rap contest.
He went further in his lyrics to claim Amobode’s net worth is not enough to buy an “outdated iPhone.” He turned on the heat when he boasted that LASU graduates ought to be the ones supervising UNILORIN lectures.
Also, Paraboi, a rapper from FUTA, jumped in defence of the Akure-based institution.
Paraboi compared UNILORIN to Arsenal and FUTA to Manchester City, a line referencing that LASU would fall like Arsenal usually do during the Premier League title races.
In his lyrics, standing in for LAUTECH, Rap Monster said Ambode, a “so-called” best rapper, will not stand a chance against him in a rap battle. He called Ambode a naive young boy and told him to return for a contest when he was old enough.
Furthermore, Rap Monster warned Ambode never to mention LAUTECH when embarking on the dissing path again.
Other university rappers are expected to join the fray in the coming days to defend their schools as the contest for supremacy continues to buzz on social media.
