Ten people were killed and nine others wounded on Thursday after a yet-to-be-identified shooter stormed Charles University in central Prague, Czech, the country’s emergency services said.

According to Bohuslav Svoboda, the governor of Prague region, the shooter, who also died in the incident, fell from the roof of the institution’s faculty of arts building after opening fire on Jan Palach Square, the New York Times reported.

The police said the assailant was killed by them. They urged people to stay away from the crime zone and people in the neighbourhood to remain inside their homes as police intervention is still ongoing, as per the Times.

Incidents of shooting are very rare in Czech, forcing Petr Fiala, the Prime Minister of the Central European country, to cut short his visit to the city of Olomouc and hurriedly return to Prague, which is the country’s capital.

“I am extremely sorry for everyone who fell victim to the inexcusable attack on the Faculty of Arts at the Charles University. My deepest condolences to their loved ones and friends,” Mr Fiala said in a post on X.
