Safety and law enforcement agencies are accused of extortion and corruption on Nigerian roads, often turning a blind eye when their palms are greased.

President Muhammadu Buhari says incessant tanker explosions bother him as he commiserated with the government and people of Benue over Sunday’s tanker explosion that left several people dead in Oshigbudu, Agatu local government area.

In a condolence message by his media aide, Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Monday, the president commiserated with the victims’ families.

“I am worried by the frequency of these tanker explosion incidents on public roads or residential areas.

“Our road traffic authorities and transportation ministries should urgently address this,” said Mr Buhari.

While noting that Nigerians should not compromise public safety under any circumstances, the president called for strict adherence to safety standards and procedures.

He emphasised that responsible agencies should enforce rules and regulations without fear or favour.

Safety and law enforcement agencies are accused of extortion and corruption on Nigerian roads, often turning a blind eye when their palms are greased.

Not a few drivers have lamented the extortionate disposition of security and traffic officers who are more concerned about being “settled” than enforcing the law.
