USAID trains Adamawa auditors for effective performance
The United State International Development Agency, State2State activity, has trained 25 Adamawa auditors in performance audits for effective service delivery in the area of education, health, water, sanitation and hygiene. .
The participants were drawn from the offices of the Accountant General, Bureau of Public Procurement, state and local government auditors-generals.
Speaking at the training on Friday in Yola, Ms Suzanne Myada, State2State’s Public Financial Management specialist, said the aim of the intervention was to train participants on how to conduct performance audits of government processes, programmes and operations.
She said performance audits are beneficial to all types and sizes of government, from small to large state agencies.
She stated, “A performance audit can be designed to increase customer satisfaction, reduce costs, align operations with mission and strategy, improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operations and improve service delivery.
“Therefore, State2State is providing this support to build the capacity of state and LG auditors to conduct performance audits of programmes, projects, operations, and processes.”
A resource person, Isaac Otabor, said that the objective of the performance audit was to constructively promote economy, transparency and ensure accountability.
He tasked the participants to understand that a performance audit seeks to provide more information, analysis and recommendations for improvement.
“You should also understand that 60 per cent of audits is field work for collecting data or evidence and if there is no evidence there are no audits. To succeed, adopt several strategies, if one does not work then apply another strategy.
“You should also be humble and ensure error-free reports, don’t rush to publish. You need to look at it again and ensure that everything is alright,” he advised.
The state Auditor General, Alhaji Usman Ahmed, appreciated State2State for the training and pledged to step down the knowledge.
He also charged the participants to apply the knowledge in practice for effective service delivery for the benefit of people in the state.
