Sri Lanka’s parliament passes new law on online content regulation
On Thursday, the speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, endorsed the certificate on the Online Safety Bill, a statement from the Department of Communication of Parliament said.
The statement said the bill would come into effect as the Online Safety Act No.9 of 2024.
The bill was passed in the parliament with amendments after a two-day debate on January 23 to 24.
Earlier, President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government said the new law would be used to deal with cyber crimes, including child abuse, data theft and online fraud.
