The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has described the state rerun held on February 3, 2024, as generally peaceful and violence-free.

This is contained in a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Sunday in Enugu.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission conducted rerun as ordered by the Appeal Court in Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency and Enugu South Urban State Constituency of Enugu State on February 3.

Mr Ndukwe stated that this was regardless of the eventual suspension of poll in Enugu South Urban State Constituency due to the non-availability of INEC’s original results sheets for the voters’ inspection before the commencement of voting.

“The commissioner made this known after leading heads of security agencies to monitor/supervise the rerun in Enugu South Urban State Constituency, before it was eventually suspended, and that of Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, which ran its full course.

“He expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the police and other security personnel involved in the election security management. He, therefore, appreciated their resilience and diligence, which he said was responsible for the peaceful and successful conduct of the exercise,” he said.

Mr Ndukwe said that the commissioner also appreciated citizens of the state, particularly the electorate and residents in the areas where the poll held, for largely conducting themselves responsibly.
