The Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) has called on residents and business owners in the state capital, Asaba, and its environs to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse to prevent disease outbreaks.

The director-general of DSCTDA, Patrick Ukah, made the call on Tuesday during a de-silting and cleaning exercise at Koka Flyover Lane, Okpanam Road, Nnebisi Road, Summit and High Court roads, among other areas.

Mr Ukah said the residents should cultivate the habit of keeping their environments clean to make them habitable for everyone.

“I am calling on residents and business owners in the capital territory to shun disposal of refuse on the roads, drains and canals.

“You should cultivate the habit of recycling and proper disposal of refuse to prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases, reduce carbon emissions and encourage tree planting, among others,” he said.

According to him, it is the collective duty of individuals, households and business owners to maintain a clean environment.

“All households should imbibe the habit of sorting their wastes, and such wastes should be segregated into recyclables and non-recyclables. If we do this, it will reduce the menace of indiscriminate waste dumping that defaces some parts of the city,” he said.

Mr Ukah urged the residents and business owners to always patronise the private sector participation operators in their respective areas.

He warned that anyone caught violating environmental laws would face the consequences.
