EPL: Haaland’s lone goal helps Man City pip Brentford; move one point adrift of Liverpool

Champions Manchester City are now one point ahead of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table after Pep Guardiola’s side defeated Brentford 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
The encounter was Man City’s outstanding game, which they could not play during their involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup, which treble-winners won in Saudi Arabia last December.
Erling Haaland’s goal in the 71st minute from a breakthrough ball was enough for Man City to secure the maximum points at home against the Bees to keep the title race close with Liverpool, who are on 57 points.
Phil Foden could have doubled the lead late on in the game with a powerful shot from the edge of the visitors’ box, but goalkeeper Mark Flekken flung himself up to parry the ball for a corner kick.
Brentford’s best chance of scoring came in the first quarter of an hour in the game when Nigeria’s Frank Onyeka, from a through ball, went against Ederson, but the goalkeeper easily caught his tame effort.
