The ECOWAS Commission has issued a security alert to its staff, urging them to reduce engagements that will require being outdoors and avoid casual outings after work hours.

The security alert seen by Peoples Gazette is dated April 28, 2021, and signed by the ECOWAS Commissioner for General Administration and Conference, Vafolay M. Tulay.

The ECOWAS Advisory was titled, ‘Security advisory on the current security situation in the country.’

“There is a heightened sense of insecurity sweeping across the country lately,” warned ECOWAS. 

It added, “Intelligence reports warn of plans by undesirable elements to infiltrate various parts of the country, particularly state capitals, including the Federal Capital Territory, with the view to perpetrate crimes such as abductions and kidnappings for ransom, or as means of getting recruits for terrorist activities.”

The alert was sequel to rising cases of violent crimes, including kidnaps and killings in the country.

The letter urged that in-country travels, whether by road or by air, be limited except necessary. 

It also warned against deserted routes and mass gatherings. 

The West African organisation urged its staff always to prepare to employ anti-ambush/counter surveillance measures and be alert while at religious gatherings, markets, motor parks, filling stations, and shopping malls. 

The advisory came against the backdrop of worsening insecurity in Africa’s most populous nation. 

Countries like Canada and the United States had issued similar security advisories to their citizens.
