On Thursday, two men, Hamza Naziru, 18, and Mohammed Muritala, 22, appeared before the Karu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for stealing security lights.

The defendants, who claimed to be scavengers, were charged with criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, mischief and theft.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against them.

The prosecution counsel, Ayotunde Adeyanju, told the court that Mr Bello, a retired soldier resident in Karu, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station on February 12.

“The complainant alleged that the defendants jointly conspired, entered his house at the above-mentioned address, and cut off the security lights that were mounted on his fence.

“After cutting the lights on the fence, the defendants climbed the fence and started removing other lights before they were caught and arrested,” Mr Adeyanju told the court.

The judge, Isa Adamu, granted the defendants bail of N200,000 each and one surety in like sum each.

He adjourned the case until April 24 for a hearing.
