President Muhammadu Buhari has reconvened the National Security Council meeting, which started on April 30 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The president called the meeting to continue deliberations on national security concerns amid BudgIT revelations that Mr Buhari embarked on an unaudited security spending spree of over N10 trillion since he assumed office in 2015.

Those in attendance at today’s meeting included Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari.

Others are the Minister of Defence, retired Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi, the National Security Adviser Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd.), and the acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, Chief of Army Staff; Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, Chief of Naval Staff; Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu, and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amoo, are also in attendance at the crucial meeting.

On Monday, the Defence Headquarters warned soldiers against any plots to overthrow Mr Buhari’s regime and denounced a call for the military to take over the reins of power, insisting it is committed to Nigeria’s democratic rule.

“We also wish to remind all military personnel that it is treasonable to even contemplate this illegality,” said the army. “The full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on any personnel found to collude with people having such agenda.”

The Nigerian Army reiterated its loyalty to Mr Buhari and the Nigerian Constitution.

“The Nigerian military wishes to dissociate itself from such anti-democratic utterance and position.

“Let it be stated categorically that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to the present administration and all associated democratic institutions,” it stated.
