Celta Vigo sacks ex-Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez over poor results

Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo has sacked former Chelsea and Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez over a run of poor results that have left the club in a battle for survival in the bottom half of the league table.
“Rafa Benitez and his staff leave RC Celta after eight months of absolute dedication and total commitment, but in which the team has not obtained the results expected by the club,” the club said in a statement on Tuesday.
The 63-year-old joined Celta Vigo in June 2023, but a series of underwhelming results has seen the club lose six of their last nine matches across all competitions, leaving them points from the drop zone meant the ultimate end of Benitez.
The statement added, “The club would like to express to Rafa Benitez and his assistants its most sincere gratitude for the honesty and professionalism they have shown since their arrival and the tireless work they have done.
“RC Celta would also like to wish them the best of luck and success in the future.”
Benitez’s coaching career has spanned other top clubs in Europe, including Real Madrid, Everton, Newcastle United, Inter Milan, and Valencia, among others.
