Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s first gay and first biracial leader, announced Wednesday that he will resign once a successor is chosen.

He spearheaded the efforts to overturn the abortion ban, which was repealed by a vote in 2018, and to legalise same-sex marriage, which was approved in a referendum in 2015.

He added that he had no set intentions for the future and that his motivations were “both personal and political”. He declared that he intended to stay on as a backbencher in the house.

“I’m proud that we have made the country a more equal and more modern place,” Mr Varadkar declared in a retirement letter issued in Dublin.
